John Munro Longyear says" Built in 1844 on the shore of Lake Fanne Hooe, near copper harbor, at the insistance of Douglas Houton, Michigan state Geologist, who started the copper boom.  He represented to Govenor Lewis Cass that the miners needed protection from the Indians, but as it turned out the mission Indians needed protection from the rowdy miners"
